How two successive discounts actually work
When a shop advertises one discount followed by another, the percentages are usually applied one after the other. They are not simply added together.
A simple example
Imagine an item costs 100. A 20% discount reduces it to 80. If a second 10% discount is then applied, that 10% is calculated from 80, not from the original 100. The final price is 72.
So 20% off followed by 10% off produces a total saving of 28%, not 30%.
Why it is easy to get wrong
Successive discounts become awkward to calculate mentally when the original price is not a round number, the percentages are unusual, or the currency uses different decimal formatting.
